Truth About Sneaker Cleaning: Myths & Tips

When it comes to sneaker care, we know that sometimes it's hard to decide what is best to keep your sneakers in top form, that’s why we are here to debunk the facts from the fiction, so your sneakers can stand the test of time.

Truth About Sneaker Cleaning: Myths & Tips

Myth 1: Conditioning Leather Sneakers: Is It Really Necessary
Crep Protect Leather Conditioner

As with any sneakers, once they have been trialled and tested under the arid sun, heavy snow and the UK’s rainy weather conditions, it can start to take a toll on their look and feel. While leather sneakers are good at keeping their moisture barrier intact, over time you’ll see that your favorite sneakers will start to look dull, discolored and simply lifeless.

That’s why it's important to invest in a leather conditioner that not only makes your sneakers look good but is properly restored, nourished and invigorated from the inside out. Our Leather Conditioner is easy to use and comes built with a foam head that makes the application process a breeze, just make sure your leather sneakers are clean before use and re-apply the lotion every 4 weeks to keep your sneakers looking as good as new.

Because let’s face it, many of you sneaker buffs would not comprise on your skin barrier so why would you put your leather investments through the same?

Myth 2: Washing Machines: Odor Eliminators or Sneaker Destroyers?
Putting your sneakers in the washing machine

The old sneaker in the pillowcase and throw it in the washing machine trick - we’ve all been there. But when it comes to eliminating odors it barely touches the surface.

Unlike traditional methods of washing materials, when cleaning your sneakers using the washing machine, it is recommended not to put your sneakers in a high-temperature setting as this could cause color bleeding and will inevitably damage the materials of your sneakers. But on the flip side, these lowered temperatures do not help eliminate odors but tend to exacerbate the cause, making your sneakers smell like a sweaty swamp.

If you struggle with lingering sneaker odors, the best way is to deal with the root cause, that’s why you should give our Crep Protect Deo a try. Our specially formulated, premium-scented deodorizer instantly eliminates odors without masking the smell, just press the dual-sided nozzle into your sneakers for a blast of freshness, lasting up to 24 hours.

Myth 3: Toothpaste Tricks: Why DIY Isn't Always the Best

Let’s face it, everyone loves a good ‘ole home remedy but does cutting corners on your sneaker care always reap results? Well in this case you’ll be out of luck. While applying toothpaste can sound like a great idea to keep those midsoles looking brand new, it actually can cause your sneaker and their midsoles to stain.

If gel toothpaste is used, the particles can cause scratches and abrasions on the midsoles causing unwanted texture which could result in irreversible damage. Last of all, toothpaste residue can become difficult to remove once applied to your sneakers, so we think it's best to stick to a mild cleaning solution like our Crep Cure.

Our all-in-one cleaning kit is perfect for tackling those dirty midsoles, all you need to do is apply a few drops of our cleaning solution to a brush, dip into some warm water and scrub across the midsoles until they are squeaky clean.

Myth 4:  You Can’t Save Your Nappy Suede
Nappy Suede

While there’s no official rule book on how to effectively clean your suede sneakers, as sneaker care connoisseurs we know that less is more when it comes to nourishing the nap. And what we mean by that is that if your suede sneakers are riddled with stains and uneven texture we recommend that you use a mild cleaning solution paired with a damp Microfiber cloth to blot those stains away. Less water means your suede sneakers will be less prone to color bleeding and causing the nap to lose its original shape.

If using water on your suede and nubucks sneakers seems too much of a risky move, invest in dry cleaning alternatives such as our Crep Protect Eraser that effortlessly, buffs and removes scuffs to keep that nap intact. Work the Eraser in up and down motion to gently remove a layer of dirt on your suede shoes.

Once your suede and nubuck sneakers are clean, grab our Suede Reviver and watch the magic unveil before your eyes. All you have to do is:

Step 1. Ensure your suede sneakers are clean and dry before use
